Training / Certifications

waterwork training Training takes place in 6 different districts from the beginning of April to the beginning of October. The season runs from early April to early October. You must be a member of NNFC to participate in water work in one of the six districts. Of course you are also very welcome if you are not yet a member. You are welcome to come and have a look first, but participating right away is much more fun. You can train twice as a non-member to see if waterworks is something for you and/or your Newfoundlanders. You do not need to register in advance. You can just come. The costs are €2 per dog per water work day. If there are more than 2 participating dogs from the same owner, the total amount is €5. Swimming harnesses or life jackets can be borrowed for the start. Handy things to take with you are a chair, a blanket for your dog, a water bowl and water, a parasol, rain gear, dry clothing, something to eat and drink, a sturdy ground spike to secure your dog, and shoes that are water resistant. . If you have a diving suit/surfing suit, you can take it with you and put it on. There are 3 basic exercises: retrieving an object from the boat, jumping out of the boat and retrieving the doll. The training During water work, all dogs wear a swimming harness or, if necessary, a special life jacket. A swimming harness consists of a chest harness that does not restrict free movement in any way. The harness is mainly intended for the safety of the dog, something that is of paramount importance in every training. On the top of the back, just behind the withers, there is a handle. You can use this to help the dog but also, in case of emergency, to lift the dog out of the water with one movement. Two floating, colored rings are attached to either side of this to provide support for a drowning person to be rescued. When a Newfoundland comes to waterworks for the first time, we will first look at how the dog reacts to the water and how the dog swims. For example, after it has been determined that the dog can swim well, the dog's owner takes a seat in the boat (this is not mandatory) and the dog is encouraged to swim behind it while they row or sail away. At a later stage we will try to see whether the dog will also swim to a stranger in the boat. In the beginning it is only a short piece. Gradually the distance will be made longer so that we are at the required distance of 50 meters. Once arrived at the boat, the dog is handed an object and is called back, for example, by the second owner / acquaintance / handler who remained on the shore. Once on land, the dog is first allowed to drain because a wet Newfoundland, despite its water-repellent coat, is almost twice as heavy as a dry one. Sometimes he gets his reward in the form of a treat or a game, although some dogs see the exercises in the water in themselves as the ultimate form of reward. Most people enjoy it so much and would like to do it again. If they get the chance, they turn around and sprint straight back into the pool. Jumping out of the boat is also built up slowly, first with help and only later is the dog allowed to attempt the jump alone. Everything is done on a non-binding basis, more is never expected of the dog than he wants and can handle. Through play, the dog water rats learn everything needed to become a good water worker. The end of the waterworks season is the water trials. An annual event where the six districts of the NNFC come together to compete to see which dog has performed the three basic exercises correctly the fastest. The fastest male and the fastest male from the Open Class then compete for the Neptunus Cup. In addition to this competition element, certificates can also be obtained. There is no competition element involved. However, the dogs must have completed the three basic exercises correctly to be eligible for their certification exercise. (see also heading Training / Certifications) In recent years, about 80 Newfoundlanders participated in this fun event. Once the basics have been reasonably mastered, we expand the exercises so that we continue to challenge the dog. We try to look at reality as much as possible, although this is not always feasible. When training, look at the available exercises. Possible exercises that can be done during training: * Swimming under supervision. * Retrieving an object from the water. Rules We're coming for a day of fun waterworks, right? YES, that is certainly the intention... water work should be a fun, sporty & relaxing day out for people and Newf. However, there are some rules necessary and we will give you some tips to make it a successful day. You can register to participate upon arrival. Registration is €2 per participating dog and €5 for three or more participating dogs from the same owner. If you are not (yet) a member of the NNFC, we will ask you after the 2nd training if you would like to become a member of the NNFC so that you can continue water works. You can also participate in other activities organized by the NNFC. Participation according to order of registration. Tip: If there are any special features, please let the volunteers know so that they can properly supervise your dog(s). Even if you or your dog have no experience with water work, it is nice for the volunteers to know this. All dogs must have had the necessary vaccinations (Weil's disease). All dogs on the shore are on a leash! When it is your dog's turn, the employee at the waterfront will indicate that the dog can be released. The person who takes a seat in the boat wears a wetsuit or a properly closed life jacket and must be at least 18 years old. All dogs swim with a swimming harness. If it turns out that your dog cannot swim well (medical, fear, old age or on the advice of the supervisor, etc.) then the dog can swim with a life jacket. Prong belts and slip chains are not permitted. Please clean up dog feces and other dirt. Do you borrow a swimming gear / life jacket / life jacket? Please put this back after the exercise so that someone else can also use it. Females in heat are allowed but may not hinder the participating dogs. The owner is responsible for this. Participation is at your own risk. Coffee & tea are available (this varies per region). Take each other into account as much as possible. (Not every dog tolerates another dog, perhaps unnecessary: do not seek confrontation). On a sunny day: remember a parasol and plenty of water. On a cold/wet day: remember to bring a blanket and dry/warm clothing for yourself. After the exercise, it is wise to remove as much water from the coat as possible and walk the dog for a while. Rub the dog thoroughly dry afterwards. Tip: a water blower is a solution for your home. Tip: It is also useful to take with you a chair, a parasol, rain gear, dry clothing, something to eat & drink, shoes that are water resistant or, if you have a diving suit/surfing suit, put it on and a sturdy ground stake to secure your dog(s)...... Do not give cookies to the dogs without the owner's permission. For example, a dog may be allergic to certain nutrients or be on a special diet or for whatever reason. Every district is happy with its water workplace. We would like to keep it that way. You can also contribute to this by picking up your waste and leaving your place clean after a day of water work.
